A 14-year-old girl reportedly killed herself in the home of a college teacher in Assam’s Chirang district on Tuesday after sending a letter to a classmate alleging sexual harassment.
The assistant professor of a college in Bengtol, who had been living at her host family’s house for about a year to graduate, was arrested on charges of rape and aiding in suicide.
According to the investigators, the minor girl was discovered hanging on Monday but the incident was not reported to authorities.
The instructor and her family members were attempting to administer her last rites when the police arrived on the scene after a suggestion from others. The corpse was transported to a morgue for a post-mortem review.
During the inquiry, it was discovered that the girl had sent a message to a friend through a social networking site expressing her desire to die due to sexual harassment, the statement said.
A local court remanded the complainant, who was also charged with triggering the loss of proof and violating the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, to three days of police custody.
