Setting Sail in Chennai

On a sunny day at the Spring Haven Wharf in Chennai, a group of pilots from Indigo prepares to embark on a new adventure. Accustomed to navigating the skies, these pilots are now eager to test their skills on J80 class sailboats at the Chennai Harbour. For many of them, clad in their signature white and blue uniforms, this will be their first time sailing on the sea.

Amrita Ravindran, a seasoned pilot, expresses her excitement, saying, “Despite living in Chennai all my life, I have never had the opportunity to sail in the sea.” Alongside 30 other pilots from Indigo, she is ready to embrace this new challenge at the Royal Madras Yacht Club, a historic sailing club in South India.

Women Pilots Take the Lead

As part of Indigo’s Women’s Day celebrations, female pilots like Shailaja Gopinath are seizing the chance to connect with their peers. Shailaja, with over two decades of flying experience, highlights the significance of this gathering, noting, “Meeting fellow women pilots is a rare occurrence in our profession. Indigo boasts the highest number of women pilots in the country, making this event even more special.”

For Shailaja, sailing offers a change of pace from her usual routine. This time, she is eager to dive in and get her hands dirty. Amrita adds that teamwork on the sailboat will not only enhance their sailing experience but also foster camaraderie among the pilots.

A Smooth Transition

According to Captain Vivek Shanbhag, Honorary Secretary of RMYC, the transition from flying to sailing is seamless for pilots. Drawing parallels between the mechanics of airplanes and sailboats, Captain Shanbhag emphasizes the universality of these skills. “Whether in the air or on the water, the principles remain the same, disregarding gender distinctions,” he explains.

As the group dons bright blue T-shirts and sunglasses, they board their sailboats and set off from the wharf. In mere moments, they are enveloped by the salty breeze and serene waves, embarking on a journey that promises both excitement and tranquility.

Embracing the Sea

The pilots navigate the waters with a sense of determination and awe, relishing the opportunity to connect with nature in a unique way. As they steer their sailboats through the harbour, they bond over the shared thrill of adventure and the beauty of the open sea.

With each wave they conquer and each gust of wind they harness, these pilots discover a newfound appreciation for the art of sailing. As they return to shore, their faces are aglow with the satisfaction of a day well spent, forging lasting memories and friendships amidst the vast expanse of the sea.
