“The world will ask you who you are, and if you don’t know, the world will tell you.” – Carl Jung
We all love to evaluate ourselves and reflect our better selves in the mirror. It feels good to know about our personality strengths. Apart from the bright cherries and blossoms, knowing our flaws also helps us build our personality by fixing them, and this is where we often do the SWOT Analysis.
Now in the 20th century, most of the time, you would find people-mainly young adults talk about personality types a lot. ENTP, INFJ, ISTJ, etc. People have even started adding their personality type to their matrimony links and social credentials. Personality niche has skyrocketed, and everyone is struggling to know their personality type. The multibillion niche has convinced companies like McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, etc to adopt these types of tests when hiring an employee.
Thou the niche became very popular in the late 90ies, but there’s a lot of misinformation spreading around that you need to focus on.
Diagnosing yourself with unreliable methods leads to depression and anxiety. Just by clicking on some bunch of multiple questions from the internet doesn’t help you conclude. Always take professional help that is based on science and medical methods.
What are the ways People evaluate personality?
Generally, people use many different ways to evaluate a personality. They might be practical as well as physical. Self-report inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Neo Pi-R MMPI/MMPI-2, and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire are some of the most common practices in the modern personality generation consensus.
Thou these methods are practiced by a lot of people but there is still room for skepticism in the department itself, and no single method is independently reliable for valuating a human mind.
With the help of a self-report inventory, a person fills a survey based on interest, values, behavior, symptoms, and traits. They are multiple questionnaires designed to extract different aspects of your character traits.
A self-Report inventory is the simplest form of a questionnaire used by counselors to assess a personality.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator:
The most controversial – Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a vast subject used by many known organizations. The test is based on extracting Rational, irrational, Sensing, and intuition functions separately which helps them to map an individual’s personality.
Even if the process was believed to be very effective in its field of expertise, but it ranks 90% inaccuracy- which is not a good percentage to completely rely on.
Neo Pi-R MMPI/MMPI-2:
This version of the test is to assess the experiential, emotional, interpersonal, attitudinal, and motivational styles of an individual. The method/process is used to measure and assess characteristics and behavioral proclivities, Extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness of a person.
Eysenck Personality Questionnaire:
The Eysenck test measures the Extraversion/introversion and Neuroticism-Stability of a person. The questionnaire contains 57 yes-no items. This method deals with assessing a person’s agreeableness, openness, neuroticism, and conscientiousness.
Why Personality questionnaire is not safe?
It is misleading because a person’s character may change from day to day. It gives false data (“bogus stuff,” one researcher puts it). The inquiries are complicated and crudely worded.
“Personality assessments don’t provide an accurate depiction of part of a person’s personality, they provide a distorted, misleading version of the whole picture.” – Michael Timms.
Famous Data Scientist Cathy O’Neil, founder of O’Neil Risk Consulting and Algorithmic Auditing coins – the tests as ‘high stake gamble’ with your life. She believes that the tests have evolved from prediction models to judgemental models to decide who is worthy and who is not worthy. A test like Myers-Briggs Type Indicator- in a real-life scenario is not trustworthy at all.
People are harmed by these types of assessments, and according to her, the tests have evolved into a type of algorithm or pattern that is believed to help companies assess their future with employees that has nothing to do with the competency of a person’s performance.
The personality tests when used by companies to hire people based on questions have not only made people miserable but also caused mass destruction. Technology Instructor of ‘The Hope Program’ (Brooklyn USA) – David Flemming Says – The personality profile is designed to distract people.
No bullshit, but Online test questionnaires have become a joke now. They are available everywhere. People have started using them basically as click-baits designed by the owners of the website to gain internet traffic and profit from the ad business. I am a site owner myself and recently I attended an online seminar to gain some advanced ideas on how to profit from my website.
The most profiting and ideal traffic generating factors are polls, Quizzes, Personality Tests, creating a contest, and hosting webinars. Makes sense right? People are so attracted to the idea of exploring themselves that they would do all sorts of stupid things it is available for them to find the answer.
The personality quiz when taken seriously, instead of helping people to discover their potential, restricts their inner potential by tagging them with a personality type that they think they will have to live through their entire life.
Just like untested drugs, a bunch of questionnaire tests evolved in the same niche which is now creating mass hysteria and problems like ‘Identity Dysmorphia’ in young adults.
What is the most liable way to self-valuate a personality?
The best way to evaluate yourself is to take the journey of life and accept who you are. There are no rules or words written in gold that will help you find your personality. The human mind develops and evolves with time, creating a better version of yourself.
Don’t judge people based on what they say today, because they might have a different perspective of the topic some years ahead in the future.
You are who you believe you would become. You are the type of person you want to become.
