According to an official, after receiving information about wood being smuggling from Henglep to Churachandpur. Soldiers of the Assam Rifles intervened swiftly and boldly and apprehended the smugglers. Recovering about 11 cubic meters of timber (A1 and A2 class) valued at Rs 3.77 lakh.
The four detained smugglers, as well as the seized wood. Were turn over to the Churachandpur Range forest department for further investigation, the source said.
Last month, Assam Rifles soldiers operating under the auspices of IGAR (South) recovered Rs 1.58 crore worth of contraband wood near Heirok village in Thoubal district.
According to the spokesman, Assam Rifles soldiers conducted the operation after receiving credible information regarding wood smuggling. They stopped two trucks filled with lumber.
Following a comprehensive examination of the trucks, the crew discovered contraband wood valued at more than a crore, he added. The confiscated goods, as well as the detained people, were sent over to the Thoubal Forest Range Office for future legal action, he said.
