Researchers have created an Artificial Intelligence (AI) device capable of accurately detecting the severity of Covid-19 instances.
According to the researchers from the University of Waterloo and Alexander Wong, a professor of systems design engineering and co-founder of software business DarwinAI, the technology might provide physicians with a critical tool to assist them in managing situations.
“Determining a patient’s severity using Covid-19 is a critical step in the clinical workflow because it helps determine the best course of treatment and care, whether it’s admitting the patient to the intensive care unit, administering oxygen therapy, or placing the patient on a mechanical ventilator,” Wong said.
Deep-learning AI was taught to analyze the amount and opacity of infection in the lungs of Covid-19 patients using chest x-rays for the work published in the journal Scientific Reports.
The researchers then matched their results to experienced radiologists’ evaluations of the identical x-rays.
Both extent and opacity, which are crucial indications of infection severity, were predicted by the AI program to be in excellent agreement with human expert evaluations.
“The encouraging findings in this research demonstrate that AI has a tremendous potential to assist frontline healthcare personnel in making choices and increasing clinical efficiency,” Wong noted.
