The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply Board Initiates Project to Convey Water from Abandoned Quarries
The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board started work on September 9, 2023, to convey water stored in abandoned quarries at Sikkarayapuram near Mangadu to the Chembarambakkam treatment plant. This project aims to supply drinking water to the city of Chennai.
Addressing Chennai’s Water Supply Challenges
Chennai has faced significant water scarcity in recent years, particularly during the 2019 drought. To address this issue, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has identified abandoned quarries in Sikkarayapuram near Mangadu as potential water sources. These quarries currently store 350 million cubic feet of water (mcft).
The water from these quarries will be pumped through three high-powered motors and two diesel generators. It will then be conveyed through a 3.5-km long pipeline to the Chembarambakkam treatment plant. This water supply project will help bridge the gap between water demand and supply in Chennai.
Creating Infrastructure for Water Transmission
To facilitate water transmission from the abandoned quarries to the treatment plant, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is working on creating the necessary infrastructure. This includes the installation of ductile iron and high-density polyethylene pipes.
Positive Impact on Water Supply and Rainwater Management
Once completed, this initiative is expected to convey approximately 30 million liters of water daily (mld) to the treatment plant. The treated water will then be distributed to various areas under the Greater Chennai Corporation.
In addition to addressing immediate water supply needs, this project also aims to mitigate inundation in the surrounding areas during the Northeast monsoon by storing rainwater in the quarries. The Chennai Water Resources Department is also planning improvement works to enhance rainwater storage in the quarries, with a budget of ₹45 crore allocated for this purpose.
Enhancing Chennai’s Water Supply
Currently, Chennai receives a water supply of nearly 1,034.11 mld, with approximately 986.18 mld supplied to domestic consumers through pipelines and tankers. The project to convey water from abandoned quarries will further enhance Chennai’s water supply and contribute to more sustainable water management in the region.
This project was initiated following recommendations from Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. during a recent review meeting.
