A Detailed Project Report (DPR) Underway for Kumbakonam Railway Station Redevelopment

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared for the redevelopment of the Kumbakonam railway station, which is located within the Tiruchi Railway Division. The Southern Railway Construction Organisation and a technical consultancy firm are collaborating to create the DPR for Kumbakonam, a significant station in terms of passenger earnings within the Tiruchi Railway Division.

Revamping Kumbakonam Station with New Facilities

The estimated cost for the redevelopment project is approximately ₹200 crore. The Southern Railway Construction Organisation, responsible for executing the project, has devised multiple initiatives to completely transform the station and introduce new amenities for the convenience of passengers.

These plans include the creation of a separate departure/arrival plaza, a circulating area adorned with lush green landscaping, a departure lobby with booking windows and ticket vending machines, retired rooms, a paid lounge, ramps at entry and exit points and platforms, the construction of a new line and platform, complete shelter coverage for all platforms, food and beverage outlets, baggage scanners, doorframe metal detectors, escalators and lifts, multi-level parking facilities for vehicles, various categories of waiting halls and lounges, a baby care room, separate kiosks for the T.N. Tourism Department, and specific lifts for persons with disabilities.

Submitting the DPR and Redevelopment Launch

Once completed, the DPR will be submitted to the Southern Railway headquarters. The redevelopment project will commence after the Railway Board approves the estimated budget. This approval will pave the way for the transformation of Kumbakonam railway station to enhance the quality of travel experience for passengers.
