The Brisbane Heat have formulated their draft strategy for the upcoming Big Bash League season, locking away three marquee players in the draft and addressing their needs for the squad. With Colin Munro, Sam Billings, and Paul Walter as their key draft picks, the Heat have spent $880,000 out of their total payment pool of $2.12 million. The Memorandum of Understanding between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers’ Association has allowed each club’s payment pool to increase by almost 58% from the previous season.
Under the new contracting rules, each team must have a minimum of six players, whether domestic, overseas, or CA-contracted, who are paid $200,000 or more per season. The six marquee players collectively must be paid a minimum of $1.7 million for BBL|13. The Heat have already secured the services of two Australian players, Usman Khawaja and Matthew Renshaw, who are likely to be among the remaining three marquee spots on the team’s roster.
Michael Neser, who finished as the second-leading wicket-taker in the previous season, and Queensland and Heat stalwart, Jimmy Peirson, have also been consistent contributors for the team. Marnus Labuschagne, although yet to excel in the T20 format, remains an integral part of the Heat’s squad.
However, the Heat will face the challenge of overseas player availability. Both Colin Munro and Sam Billings will be participating in the UAE’s ILT20 competition in late January, which means their availability for BBL|13 will be limited to nine regular season games. If the Heat qualify for the finals, Munro and Billings will miss out. On the other hand, Paul Walter, the hard-hitting English allrounder who was a surprise pick in the third round draft, will be available for the entire season, including the finals.
The Heat have the option to sign overseas replacement players for Munro and Billings, provided those players were among the original 353 who nominated but weren’t selected in the BBL|13 Draft.
