ICC Rates Newlands Pitch as “Unsatisfactory”

Following the match, the International Cricket Council (ICC) rated the Newlands pitch as “unsatisfactory” after the contest ended within five sessions. This decision was made under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, and only 642 balls were bowled in the match.

“The pitch in Newlands was very difficult to bat on. The ball bounced quickly and sometimes alarmingly throughout the match, making it difficult to play shots,” said Chris Broad, the match referee for the Test. As a result, Newlands was awarded one demerit point, with Cricket South Africa having 14 days to appeal against the sanction.

Indian Skipper and South African Coach Criticize Newlands Pitch

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was vocal in his criticism of the Newlands surface, emphasizing the challenging nature of Test cricket. South African coach Shukri Conrad also expressed dissatisfaction, highlighting the rapid conclusion of the match and its impact on the integrity of Test cricket.

Thrilling Performances Lead to Indian Victory

Despite the controversy surrounding the pitch, India’s pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah delivered exceptional performances, contributing to India’s historic victory. Siraj’s six for 15 skittled South Africa for 55 in their first innings, while Bumrah’s six for 61 in the second Proteas innings sealed the win for India.

This victory allowed India to draw the two-match series 1-1, marking a significant achievement for the team despite the challenges posed by the Newlands pitch.
