McAfee, a security software firm, recently released a report indicating that artificial intelligence (AI) is set to play a significant role on Valentine’s Day. According to their survey of 5,000 adults across nine countries, 26 percent planned to use generative AI tools to write love letters for their partners or potential love interest.
Modern Love: The Transformation of Relationships
The findings are part of McAfee’s Modern Love research report, which aimed to explore the impact of AI and the Internet on modern relationships. Surprisingly, the study revealed that 67 percent of adults were unable to distinguish between a love letter written by AI and one written by a human.
Leveraging AI Tools for Love Letters
More than a quarter of the respondents expressed their intention to utilize tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot to help them express their love to their dates and partners. The primary reason cited for using AI-powered ghostwriters was to appear more confident, as stated by 27 percent of the respondents. Others noted a lack of time and inspiration, with 21 percent each, as their reasons for seeking AI assistance.
The Challenge of Identifying AI-Generated Love Letters
Although nearly half of the surveyed adults (49 percent) would be offended if they received an AI-generated love letter, a substantial 67 percent were unable to discern whether a love letter was written by a human or with the assistance of a machine.

Generative AI tools, based on large language models (LLM), are capable of writing texts that closely resemble human writing. These tools allow users to customize the writing style, flow, and tonality. High-end AI assistants like ChatGPT Plus and Copilot Pro further enable users to create chatbots that bear a strong resemblance to them while writing responses.
Risk of AI-Powered Romance Scams
The study pointed out that the uncanny resemblance of AI-generated texts to human writing poses a potential risk for romance scams. McAfee highlighted that cybercriminals could exploit this technology to deceive vulnerable individuals through false promises of love and relationships. In fact, the study discovered that 51 percent of the respondents admitted to falling victim to catfishing, where they interacted with online strangers pretending to be someone else.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, McAfee urged people to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when it comes to online interactions. The firm advised against entertaining requests, even from acquaintances, to send money or sensitive information online.
