Jio Platforms Soars 21% in Historic IPO Debut

Jio Platforms, the dynamic telecom and digital services subsidiary of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, made waves on the stock market by soaring 21% on its debut. This impressive surge came after the company raised a staggering $3.2 billion, marking India’s largest and most subscribed initial public offering (IPO) to date, with over $77 billion in investor bids.

The shares opened at ₹1,358 (approximately $14), a notable jump from the IPO price of ₹1,119 (around $12). This rapid increase valued Jio at roughly ₹12.5 trillion (about $131.9 billion), positioning it as the second-most valuable publicly traded company in India, trailing only its parent, Reliance Industries, valued at around ₹16 trillion (around $168.6 billion). Back in 2020, when major investments came from Meta and Google, Jio was valued at up to ₹4.91 trillion (approximately $65 billion).

Unprecedented Demand and Record Subscription

The IPO, which took place from October 21 to 22, attracted bids for 22.19 times the shares available, according to exchange data. Over 13.8 million individual applications poured in, making it the most subscribed stock offering in India’s history and demonstrating intense investor interest in the country’s largest telecom player.

Background: Jio’s Rapid Ascent

Since launching in 2016, Jio has disrupted the Indian telecom market by offering free data and affordable services, quickly capturing customers from established operators like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and state-owned BSNL. Today, Jio boasts over 540 million customers, solidifying its position as the largest telecom operator in India. While Jio’s current pricing is on par with its competitors, it has successfully expanded into broadband, cloud services, and artificial intelligence.

Leadership Vision for Global Expansion

Akash Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s eldest son and Jio Platforms’ managing director, emphasized the company’s ambitious vision during the listing ceremony. “My dream is that one day, when the world counts its great technology companies, one of them will be from India, and that company will be called Jio Platforms Limited,” he expressed, highlighting the leadership’s commitment to turning Jio into a global tech powerhouse.

Financial Results: Strong Growth Ahead

In the fiscal year ending March 2026, Jio reported a remarkable profit of ₹300.5 billion (approximately $3.2 billion) on revenues of ₹1.47 trillion (around $15.5 billion), both figures reflecting an impressive growth of about 15% from the previous year. Additionally, for the June quarter, Jio saw a nearly 12% rise in revenue and a 9% increase in profit.

IPO Proceeds: Debt Management and Growth Strategies

Utilizing the funds raised from the IPO, Jio plans to allocate ₹275 billion (around $2.9 billion) to repay debt accrued by its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. The remainder of the IPO proceeds will be directed toward general corporate purposes. As of June 30, Jio reported total borrowings amounting to ₹613.7 billion (around $6.5 billion).

Investor Support: A Testament to Jio’s Value

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Jio garnered significant support from American investors, including Meta, which invested $5.7 billion, and Google, which contributed $4.5 billion. Other notable investors such as General Atlantic, Silver Lake, and Vista Equity Partners also backed the company. For this IPO, none of these investors sold shares, as it completely comprised newly issued shares.

Conclusion: A New Era for Jio Platforms

Jio Platforms’ phenomenal stock market debut not only reflects strong investor confidence but also opens a new chapter for the company as it aspires to global tech leadership. With Akash Ambani at the helm, the telecom giant is poised for future growth, aiming to transform the digital landscape not only in India but worldwide.
