The Kansas City Chiefs’ remarkable championship run came to a crushing halt Sunday as quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a devastating 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers that officially eliminated the team from playoff contention.
The injury occurred with 1:53 remaining in the fourth quarter as Mahomes scrambled toward the sideline while throwing the ball away. Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand brought down the three-time Super Bowl champion, who immediately clutched his knee in visible pain.
“It didn’t look good,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said following the game. An MRI later confirmed the worst fears: a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament that will require surgery and likely sideline Mahomes for six to eight months.
The devastating injury caps off what has been an uncharacteristically difficult season for the Chiefs, who entered the year as Super Bowl favorites but struggled throughout the campaign. The loss to Los Angeles snapped Kansas City’s decade-long playoff streak and marked the first time since 2012 that the franchise will miss the postseason.
Mahomes took to social media to address the setback, writing: “Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it hurts. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I will be back.”
The Chiefs’ playoff drought ends a historic run that included seven consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances, five Super Bowl berths in six years, and three Lombardi trophies. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, who entered the game after Mahomes’ injury, completed three straight passes to give fans hope before throwing a game-sealing interception to Chargers safety Derwin James Jr.
Injuries Strike Across the League
Kansas City wasn’t alone in suffering a major injury blow on Sunday. Green Bay Packers star pass rusher Micah Parsons also went down with what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported as a likely torn ACL during the Packers’ 34-26 loss to the Denver Broncos.
The injury occurred late in the third quarter as Parsons was pursuing Broncos quarterback Bo Nix on a non-contact play. Packers coach Matt LaFleur was similarly grim in his assessment: “It didn’t look good. I’ll leave it at that.”
For Green Bay, the loss dropped them a half-game behind the Chicago Bears in the NFC North race, setting up a crucial divisional showdown next weekend at Soldier Field.
Denver quarterback Bo Nix delivered a standout performance to lead the Broncos to their 11th consecutive victory, completing 23 of 34 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns. The win clinched a playoff berth for Denver and improved their record to 12-2, tops in the AFC.
Bills Stage Dramatic Comeback
In another Sunday thriller, the Buffalo Bills mounted an impressive comeback from a 21-0 deficit to defeat the New England Patriots 35-31, preventing New England from clinching the AFC East division title.
Josh Allen orchestrated the remarkable turnaround, throwing for 193 yards and three touchdowns while adding 48 rushing yards. Running back James Cook contributed 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, plus a receiving touchdown.
The Patriots had taken command early behind two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Drake Maye and a 52-yard scoring run by rookie TreVeyon Henderson. However, Buffalo dominated the final two and a half quarters, outscoring New England 35-10 over that span.
“No matter what the score is – if it’s in the third quarter, in the fourth quarter, whatever it is – if we’ve got a chance and we’ve got the ball, we feel like we like our chances,” Allen said after the victory.
The comeback moved Buffalo within one game of the Patriots, who had entered the matchup riding a 10-game winning streak. With the loss, New England will have to wait at least another week to secure the division crown.
