Mahomes Suffers Season-Ending ACL Tear as Chiefs Miss Playoffs in Stunning NFL Sunday

Week 15 of the NFL season delivered another dose of the unpredictability that has defined this campaign, but none more shocking than the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff elimination and the devastating injury to their franchise quarterback.

The most stunning development came in Los Angeles, where the Chiefs’ dynasty appears to have hit a wall. Kansas City was officially eliminated from playoff contention following a 16-13 loss to the Chargers, ending a remarkable 10-year postseason streak that included seven consecutive AFC Championship game appearances and three Super Bowl victories.

The loss itself was painful enough, but the real blow came in the fourth quarter when Patrick Mahomes suffered what was later confirmed to be a torn ACL in his left knee. The three-time Super Bowl winner was scrambling toward the sideline when he was tackled by Chargers defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, immediately grabbing his knee in obvious pain.

“It didn’t look good,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said after the game. An MRI later confirmed the worst fears, with Kansas City announcing that Mahomes had sustained a complete tear of his anterior cruciate ligament.

Mahomes took to social media to address the injury, writing: “Don’t know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it’s hurts. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back.”

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew briefly provided hope, completing three straight passes after entering the game. However, with 20 seconds remaining, his underthrown pass intended for Travis Kelce was intercepted by Chargers safety Derwin James Jr., sealing Kansas City’s fate and ending their remarkable playoff run.

The day’s injury woes extended beyond Kansas City. In Denver, the Packers suffered their own devastating blow when star pass rusher Micah Parsons went down with what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported as a likely torn ACL during Green Bay’s 34-26 loss to the Broncos.

“It didn’t look good. I’ll leave it at that,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said following the non-contact injury that occurred while Parsons was pursuing Denver quarterback Bo Nix.

The loss dropped Green Bay a half-game behind the Chicago Bears in the NFC North race, while Denver’s victory capped an impressive 11-game winning streak and clinched a playoff berth for the Broncos, who now sit atop the AFC at 12-2.

Denver quarterback Bo Nix delivered a standout performance, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns. The second-year signal-caller led a crucial comeback after Green Bay had taken a 23-14 lead in the third quarter.

“I think a play like that, a sudden turnover, just gets some adrenaline, gets some emotion back in the game,” Nix said after capitalizing on a Patrick Surtain II interception to spark the comeback.

In Foxborough, the Buffalo Bills staged their own dramatic comeback, overcoming a 21-0 deficit to defeat the New England Patriots 35-31. The victory prevented New England from clinching the AFC East title and moved Buffalo within one game of the division-leading Patriots.

Josh Allen orchestrated the comeback with 193 passing yards and three touchdowns, while adding 48 yards on the ground. Running back James Cook contributed significantly with 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, plus a receiving touchdown.

The Patriots had built their substantial lead behind two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Drake Maye and a 52-yard scoring run from rookie TreVeyon Henderson. However, Buffalo dominated the remainder of the contest, outscoring New England 35-10 after falling behind by three touchdowns.

“No matter what the score is – if it’s in the third quarter, in the fourth quarter, whatever it is – if we’ve got a chance and we’ve got the ball, we feel like we like our chances,” Allen said after the comeback victory.

The day’s complete results paint a picture of a league where momentum can shift dramatically from week to week, with several playoff races tightening as the regular season enters its final stretch.
