Lightspeed Ventures Makes Bold Move: New $250 Million AI-Focused Fund for India
Lightspeed Ventures is turning its sights on India with an ambitious $250 million early-stage fund, aiming to capitalize on the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to usher in the next wave of startups in one of the world’s most vibrant markets.
Significant Investment Plans
The Silicon Valley-based venture firm, which has already made mark in the AI space with investments in companies like Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks, is looking to replicate its success in India. Among its notable investments is Sarvam AI, a prominent developer of large language models in the country, which has garnered support from the Indian government for developing sovereign AI models.
New Fund Details
Named Lightspeed India Partners V, the new fund will be half the size of its predecessor, which raised $500 million in 2022. Notably, it has already garnered commitments for 80% of its $250 million target, as revealed in a letter to investors shared with TechCrunch.
Although the fund’s target size was disclosed recently, earlier reports suggested that Lightspeed had aimed to raise between $300 million and $350 million for this initiative. The firm is set to start making investments from this new fund within two months, with an investment duration of approximately two and a half years.
Aligning with Global Strategy
In a significant move to align its regional funds with its global strategy, Lightspeed will now synchronize its India funds with its worldwide fundraising cycles, which is a first for the firm since it was established nearly two decades ago. This strategy reflects a growing focus on AI in the early-stage investment landscape.
A Competitive Landscape
This is not an isolated decision; competing firm Accel recently raised $550 million for its latest India fund under a coordinated $3.5 billion global fundraising effort, which marked the first instance of the firm raising multiple funds simultaneously. Lightspeed’s strategy adapts to a landscape where rapid investment pace is paramount.
Focusing on AI Potential in India
Lightspeed’s new fund is also a clear indication of its sharper focus on AI. The firm believes that AI has the potential to create more value in India than the internet did. The fund aims to explore AI-driven startups throughout India and Southeast Asia, where burgeoning talents and resources are abundant.
The Global AI Market Context
Despite India’s nascent status in developing major frontier AI models compared to the U.S. and China, the country’s vast pool of software developers offers a promising landscape for AI applications. For context, India has attracted significantly lower AI investment than its global counterparts, but that trend is rapidly changing as investors grow increasingly optimistic about opportunities in the region.
Lightspeed’s Broader Investment Portfolio
While the $250 million fund specifically targets AI, it represents a small fraction of Lightspeed’s overall global capital, which exceeds $65 billion. In December, the firm raised a record $9 billion across multiple new funds, with part of this comprising a $980 million early-stage venture fund. Overall, Lightspeed has deployed approximately $900 million through its dedicated India and Southeast Asia funds, alongside another $1.6 billion from its global venture funds to support regional companies.
Looking Ahead
With seasoned teams managing the new fund, Lightspeed is poised for strategic investments that align with its judicial foresight in the Indian market. The firm has previously backed successful startups like quick-commerce platform Zepto and enterprise software businesses.
This renewed focus on AI could potentially reshape the investment landscape in India, offering exciting prospects for startups eager to innovate in the tech-driven economy. As the AI sector continues to grow, it remains to be seen how Lightspeed and other investors will navigate and harness this wave of technological advancement.
