Microdrama Phenomenon: EloElo’s Story TV Raises $80 Million Amid India’s Entertainment Boom

More than 118 million users are tuning into microdramas every month, marking a significant surge in this serialized format within India. Among the front-runners in this burgeoning space is EloElo’s Story TV, a platform boasting over 33 million active users, as reported by industry analysts.

Capitalizing on this explosive growth, EloElo has secured $80 million in Series C funding from Hornbill Capital and NBCUniversal. This funding round elevates EloElo’s total fundraising to $130 million and values the company at approximately $500 million.

With a growing preference for vertical video platforms, serialized content consumption is witnessing a global rise, notably in the U.S., China, and India. Notable celebrities such as Issa Rae, James Franco, and Kim Kardashian are investing in and participating in this new entertainment format.

India, home to over a billion internet users, presents a goldmine for entertainment content. Analysts predict the industry may exceed $3-$4 billion in annual revenue by 2030. Last year, platforms like Story TV, Kuku TV, and Quick TV were among the top video streaming apps in India.

Founded in 2020 by former Flipkart executive Saurabh Pandey, Story TV has rapidly expanded its library to include over 5,000 titles across six languages. Pandey shared with TechCrunch that the short and engaging content keeps users connected, averaging 95 minutes on the app daily.

“I believe the next billion users will not grow up watching traditional television,” Pandey stated. “They will engage with mobile content designed for brief viewing slots throughout the day. Serialized storytelling has not been adequately addressed until now.”

While there remains a strong market for family-oriented big-screen viewing, the majority of content consumption is shifting towards mobile devices.

Story TV faces competition from platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, where creators post content for free. To attract its audience away from these platforms, Story TV emphasizes high-quality productions and partnerships, including one with Balaji Telefilms for exclusive content.

The platform offers subscription options ranging from monthly to yearly plans, along with ad-supported free content to attract users. However, monetization remains a challenging landscape in India, as many users prefer free content over subscriptions. According to a report from analyst firm Redseer, approximately 40 million people have paid for microdrama at least once, but only about 15-17 million remain monthly subscribers. Meanwhile, a survey by Ormax Media indicated that 72% of respondents have never paid for microdramas.

AI Innovations and Future Plans

As the demand for diverse content surges, microdrama platforms are increasingly leveraging AI technologies. Some platforms, like Google-backed Kuku, aim to enhance workflows and produce a greater volume of content. Other platforms, such as Dashverse’s Shortfree, explore using AI-driven models to generate serialized clips.

Story TV has entered this arena with its own tool, Dolphin AI, initially developed for internal video enhancement. Plans are underway to make the tool accessible, serving as an editor equipped with templates and models for creating audio, images, and video.

EloElo envisions this tool’s application not just for content creation but also for marketing initiatives. While Indian platforms like Pocket and Kuku have built AI resources for creators, others, such as InVideo, are yet to offer robust alternatives for vid-editing software.

Pandey underscores the need for human creativity in storytelling, viewing AI as a supportive mechanism. “AI is like a high-speed race car, but it requires a skilled driver to steer it. Human creativity, the creative director, or showrunner, is essential in the storytelling process.”

Apart from microdrama, EloElo has branched into vertical video learning through an app called Master, competing against platforms like Seekho and Kuku’s Guru, plus an AI companion app, Voxy AI. The company boasts over 40 million monthly users

With a current workforce of 240, EloElo aims to recruit more talent for its AI and machine learning teams while allocating significant resources to amplify its production of original content.

This latest funding round saw contributions from organizations like MIT Investment Co., alongside existing supporters like Play Ventures and Kalaari Capital.
