Listen Labs Backs Out of $125 Million Funding Round Amid Salesforce Buyout Talks
Listen Labs, a cutting-edge market research startup specializing in voice AI technology, recently found itself at the center of attention after signing a term sheet for a substantial $125 million Series C funding round, valuing the company at $1.5 billion. However, multiple sources have indicated that the round will not be closing, as the company has opted to walk away from the agreement—an unusual step in the venture capital landscape that industry insiders often view unfavorably.
Funding Round Collapse Linked to Salesforce Talks
The abrupt termination of the funding round appears to be tied to ongoing acquisition discussions with Salesforce. According to reports from Business Insider, Salesforce has engaged in talks to potentially acquire Listen Labs for approximately $2 billion, although these discussions are not yet finalized and might not culminate in a deal.
Founded just three years ago, Listen Labs has quickly emerged as a leader in the realm of AI-driven customer research, boasting about $30 million in annualized revenue—three times the revenue of a rival, Simile. The latter recently announced it had closed a $200 million Series B at a remarkable $2 billion valuation led by Greenoaks, setting a challenging benchmark for Listen Labs.
Potential for Future Valuation Growth
If the acquisition talks with Salesforce do not proceed, industry insiders suggest that Listen Labs may once again enter the funding market, aiming for a valuation of $2 billion or more. The potential acquisition could enhance Salesforce’s AI capabilities, leveraging Listen Labs’ technology to better predict customer needs. However, some analysts believe that a revenue multiple of 67 times may be deemed excessive for Salesforce.
Innovating the Market Research Landscape
Listen Labs employs advanced AI to formulate survey questions and conduct interviews through audio or video, turning these conversations into reports similar to those created by traditional market researchers. Fortune 500 companies, including Microsoft and Canva, utilize this technology to quickly assess customer needs and satisfaction—elements that can be time-consuming and costly with traditional research methods.
Competitive Landscape
In addition to Simile, other players in this fast-evolving sector include startups like Outset, Keplar, and Aaru. While some companies focus on automating real-human interviews, others like Aaru and Simile employ an entirely synthetic approach that utilizes AI to simulate human behavior without requiring interviews at all.
Founders and Previous Fundraising
Listen Labs was co-founded in 2020 by Florian Jüngermann, a former competitive programming champion, and Alfred Wahlforss, an entrepreneur with a background in staffing through his startup, Bemlo. The two founders met while pursuing master’s degrees at Harvard.
The startup had a prior valuation of $500 million after successfully closing a $69 million Series B funding round in late January, backed by firms like Ribbit Capital, Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC.
