What Makes the Startup Battlefield Top 20?
The Startup Battlefield Top 20 is a prestigious selection of the most innovative startups among the Startup Battlefield 200. These companies possess unique, category-defining ideas poised to disrupt their respective industries. The selection criteria focus on compelling, differentiated companies ready to take the global stage.
Key to Selection: Your Pitch Video! Your product and founder videos are crucial—they’re your chance to make a lasting first impression. Show your product in action, emphasize what sets you apart, and let your passion shine through. Metrics matter, but conviction is key.
Once selected, you’ll receive tailored guidance from the TechCrunch team for pitch preparation. Each Top 20 company gets the chance to pitch live for six minutes at the Disrupt Stage, followed by a Q&A with an elite panel of investors, including Aileen Lee (Cowboy Ventures) and Ann Miura-Ko (Floodgate).
Out of these Top 20, five companies will earn the opportunity to pitch again on the final day of Disrupt to a new panel of judges. The ultimate winner will walk away with the coveted Disrupt Cup and $100,000 in equity-free cash!
Not Selected? You’re Still in the Game!
Keep in mind that the Top 20 list isn’t final until the Disrupt event kicks off. Every year, unexpected changes occur—founders may drop out or others may rise to the occasion. A shortlist of companies is maintained for potential last-minute selections.
The real opportunity lies within the Startup Battlefield 200. Being among the 200 means more than just a moment on stage; it gives you invaluable access, exposure, and networking possibilities that far outlast the event itself.
Benefits for All Startup Battlefield 200 Participants
Even if you don’t make the Top 20, participating in Startup Battlefield can significantly impact your trajectory.
All selected companies enjoy benefits such as:
- A fully funded demo booth at TechCrunch Disrupt
- Complimentary event passes for your team
- Access to a pre-event virtual program with industry-leading VCs and founders

Whether on the Disrupt Stage competing for the prize or on the Showcase Stage, every company has the chance to shine in front of investors, press, and potential partners, showcasing what’s next in tech.
In addition, each company enters the TechCrunch ecosystem, opening avenues for editorial coverage, podcast features, and the chance to return and pitch again in future events. This growing visibility can compound over time.
